Our reenactment group attended the Museum's air show (that was unfortunately canceled) in early October. The museum made the wise decision to cancel the airshow as they were not able to complete full aircrew flight qualifications before the show. Also, President Trump was flying out to an aircraft carrier off Virginia Beach on Sunday and a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) was in effect that wold have effected the airshow regardless of aircrew qualification training. Still, the museum asked various groups to still attend and we had a great time.
The museum has lots of aircraft on display and one could easily spend an entire day there. Here's the museum's Grumman Avenger doing aircrew training. It was flying all day Saturday and it was a delight to see it in the air! Since I did not know how well the “not” airshow would be attended, I elected to not bring my SCR-274N system. Instead I brought my SCR-287 system and DF radios.
The BC-348Q is fully restored and powered by a dynamotor. With a 50 foot wire strung between two tents I was easily able to hear numerous signals. I had the receiver tuned to CHU Canada on 7850 Kc and people were amazed that the receiver could "hear that far"! The BC-375 was there for display only as there is no practical way to power it in our field setup. The DF setup was identical to that of Eisenhower Farms in September. View outside the Radio Tent early one morning:
It's not only the big items that make a reenactment event successful, but it's also the little things that add to the realism of an encampment. Our group did a mail call demo. We had to write letters back home and everyone had a letter addressed to them. Mine was from my “wife” who informed me that times were hard and she had to see the family cow. I also got a present from home....
Another really novel thing someone did was make war time KitKat candy bars! Modern KitKat bars were purchased and the wrappings discarded. The candy was wrapped in wax paper. The outer covering was hand designed, printed, cut, and wrapped about the candy bar! That took a lot of effort, but it really added to the realism of out setup!
I couldn't bring myself to tear it open.... with all the preservatives in a modern candy bar, it will probably outlast me! Some viewes of the encampment.
And finally....... Grumman Avenger folding it's winge video clip
